Even more than that I love the hunting style hinted at here: You see no (cross)bow, spear or other ranged weapon except those tiny (bone?) needles. So is it a poison and slit their throat when they get slow?
Ah, depends on the poison and much more on the amount. If it's a fast acting kind there's a good chance that the animals metabolism will break most of it down (and slowing down in the process, allowing the hunter to catch up and deliver the kill) so humans can eat it without danger. There's quite some art in hunting with poison I guess. Too little and the animal escapes, too much and it'll go down faster but you won't eat either.
