I don't make promises very often because I have a bad memory and often forget I made them. Then I don't keep them, because I don't remember them, and then people get mad at me.
But when it comes to things that really really matter - ie. Marriage - I can keep those quite easily.
therefore, I don't even make promises in the first place. If I tell someone I will or will not do something, then I should be expected to do exactly that. No need to get entangled in the unnecessary...

Just let your 'yes' be yes and your 'no' be no. There's no need to make a process we call "promises" to assure one another of things.
